When York Minster Is Free

Free for worship and prayer including Evensong, free for York residents and students, free for accompanied under-17s. Sightseeing is £13–£28 — here is exactly where the line falls.

Updated August 2026

This is the most-asked question about the Minster, and the answer deserves better than a ticket pitch. York Minster is free more often than people think — and knowing the rules tells you whether you need a ticket at all.

Free, Always

  • Worship and prayer. Every service — morning prayer, Holy Communion, Choral Evensong — is free to attend, no ticket, no booking. You will not be able to sightsee from a pew, but you will be inside the building at its most alive.
  • York residents and York students, with valid ID, including during sightseeing hours. One of the most generous residents’ schemes of any English cathedral.
  • Accompanied children 17 and under, and carers.

What Costs Money: Sightseeing

Walking the building as a visitor — the Great East Window, the Chapter House, the undercroft museum, photographs and the multimedia guide — runs £13–£28 at the door depending on ticket type, with the combined tower ticket around £26. The Minster is upfront about why: no state funding, and a medieval building whose upkeep runs to thousands of pounds a day.

So Which Are You?

Coming to worship, or curious enough to attend Evensong? Go free, tonight. Our Evensong guide covers how it works.

Coming to see the building properly? That is the sightseeing ticket. The one sold here is the Minster’s own official ticket at $27, with the multimedia guide included and free cancellation to 24 hours — the two things the walk-up ticket does not offer.

Live in York? Bring proof of address. You need nothing from this site.

Honesty being the policy: no ticket seller — us included — can get you into sightseeing free. Anyone claiming otherwise is describing the worship entrance, which was never closed to you in the first place.

If the Minster is one stop among many paid doors, york-city-pass.com runs the honest math on when the Visit York Pass beats individual tickets.
