The Tower Climb

The best view in York is at the top of the central tower, and the Minster makes you earn it honestly: 275 steps, most of them a narrow medieval spiral.

• Age 8 and over — a hard rule, not a suggestion.
• Timed entry, added to a sightseeing ticket; a combined ticket at the door runs about £26.
• No lift. The staircase is genuinely tight in stretches, single-file with passing places, and there is no early exit once you commit.
• Weather can close it at short notice — it is an exposed roof in Yorkshire.

Who Should Climb

Anyone reasonably mobile who wants the one view that puts York together: the medieval street plan, the walls, the Shambles’ rooflines, and moors on a clear day. Photographers should carry the camera strapped — you will want both hands on the rail more than once.

Who Should Think Twice

Anyone uneasy in tight spiral stairs, anyone for whom 275 steps is a genuine exertion, and parents with children close to the age limit who dislike being committed mid-climb. There is no shame in the honest alternative: the city walls walk is free, flat, and gives York’s second-best views.

Practical Order
